The Unicorn & The Wasp

The Unicorn & The Wasp
A poem, by M.M.S

A Unicorn went a-walking,
One day amidst the grass.
And got itself a-talking,
With a wasp that came to pass.
Said Unicorn to Wasp “I really think it drear,
That after all this time there’s only you to fear.”
“Untrue!” said Wasp “Untrue indeed! For here I think you’ll see,
That I only hurt the creatures, who think of hurting me.”
The Unicorn stopped and laughed aloud,
Its horn agleam, aglow, and proud.
Said Unicorn, with a serious look, “By chance!” It said, “By chance,”
“If someone were to anger you, or double-cross, by chance,
Would your wings be quick to sing? Would your sword be quick to dance?”
The Wasp responded moments later, fallen far behind,
“A tainted soul, a tainted horn, a tainted heart to mind.
Put these things together, then who knows what you may find.”
The Unicorn then spoke, its eyes as dark as dun,
“You wasps and your riddles, you think it’s all good fun.
But tell me, what should happen, should Earth swallow Sun?”
“Dark, I should think. Quite dark indeed.”
Said the Wasp to its friend, with a hint of greed.
The Unicorn paused, and held out a hoof.
A smile on its face, yet it looked quite aloof.
“Come now!” it said, “Come now. Our time is at end.
Let us part, not as enemies, but as unlikely friends.”
So the Wasp reached out, with its stinger and touched,
The hoof of the Unicorn, just barely brushed.
Now each on their own, they both turned away.
And deep in their thoughts, had one last thing to say.
“Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.”

“Anything’s possible, ‘til the cards are turned over.”
